DOVES
FRIDAY 13TH MARCH / THE EMPIRE / MIDDLESBROUGH
DOORS 7:30PM / 14+ / £18Doves at The Empire in Middlesbrough!? You better believe it. Let's be honest, it's not very often that a band of this calibre come to our town is it? Their debut album was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize, their next two albums both went to number one in the charts and their fourth album is scheduled for release in April. Add to that eight top ten singles including the likes of 'Pounding', 'There Goes The Fear' and 'Black And White Town' and you get a band who are absolute bona fide superstars. FACT. Last time they played live, some band called the Manic Street Preachers supported them. Imagine that. Not a bad choice of support band, eh? Doves have done a couple of decent support slots too - U2 and Oasis amongst others. Blimey. Anyway, embarking on their first full tour for almost three years, the band will be playing a set of all of their classic tunes plus a selection of songs - including new single 'Kingdom Of Rust' - from their aforementioned fourth album. Doves guitarist Jez Williams told NME in a recent feature that the new record is "so schizophrenic, but also strangely cohesive." Intriguing! Tickets go on sale Friday 30th January from www.ticketweb.co.uk and local outlets. I'd buy one if I was you. www.nme.com/news/doves/42324www.myspace.com/dovesmyspacewww.doves.net/

It was a decidedly accurate name for them since castration for both male and female members was the central tenet of their faith. The sect was on offshoot of an earlier radical Christian movement and they held that Adam and Eve had fallen into sin through carnal union. As a result, male and female genitalia (including testicles and breasts) had been grafted on to them after their expulsion from the Garden of Eden and represented complementary halves of the original "forbidden fruit".
